Meaningless Rituals

25 09 2006

Why do we do the things we do?

Why do we go to church or give money away?

Because we’re supposed to or because we think God needs it? Do we honestly put on our best clothes for an hour once a week, stand and sit at all the right times, and sing all the appropriate songs for God’s sake, or because it’ll make us look better to the world around us? We’re tired of all the empty rituals and routines. And so is God. God hates it when we call ourselves Christians but ignore all the things he really cares about. He hates it when we go through hollow religious routines out of some feeling of duty or obligation. God doesn’t want the meaningless rituals. God wants our hearts.

For years I went to church because “you were suppose to”. “A lot of times I find myself looking and thinking, ‘Is this what god had in mind?'”. People follow this, this path that they show to people as the path of God.

“Jesus said to them, ‘Everything for you is about being seen in public as important people. I mean you love to be looked up to. You love to be respected. You love the best seats where everyone can see you.’ And then Jesus says ‘Everything for you is about appearance. How thing look to the other people?’

“I’ve had it with you! You are hopeless, you religious scholars, you Pharisees!Frauds! Your lives are roadblocks to God’s kingdom. You refuse to enter and won’t let anyone else in either.

Matthew 23:13(MSG)

God says in the book of Isaiah, ‘These people, they honour me with their lips but their hearts are from me.’ I mean does God need us to attend a church service once or twice a week?

“Is church a building? Like a hour once a week? Church is people, People who’s hearts are beating more and more like God’s”.

How i know, If you were a christian you would as well. I haven’t seen god, but i believe that he doesn’t care f you go to church two days a week or place a photo of him in a room or something. All he cares is he want’s us to live well, and he knows that the only way to do that is to live the way he provides us.

“Sons I have reared and bought up, but they have revolted against ME.
An ox knows its owner, and a donkey its manager
But Isarel does not know me, My people don’t understand”
Isaiah 1:2-3

hectic.
islam believes that all infidels must die, and becoming a martyr is the most holy thing to do. they have been told by god, and it is written in the koran, whcih, like the bibile is “true”. mohammed, a prohpet wrote the koran, and the bible is also written by prophets. who is right?
if your right in your beliefs then the muslims must surely be right aswell, otherwise, who is? and which god is the only god?

1. God may want your hearts, the governing bureaucracy (‘Church’) wants your money. Religion, amonst other things, is a wonderful consolidation with a fantasic market & profitability potential.
2. ‘For years I went to Church’ I don’t know whether this is true, or whether you are referring to a Temple in relation to Hinduism. But if this does pertain to you attending a Christian church, I am genuinely curious as to the reactions of your family? You see i went to church once, and i have an aethiest family. just curious.
3. ‘But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and drain away your life. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.’

This is just some of it (see Leviticus 26.14 onwards). Perhaps such rituals are carried out of fear, for want of obedience. For someone who believes in God and his word as a holy truth, this may be some sort of motivation for performing those rituals, whether they be meaningless or not.

hi jill,
I don’t know if you agreeing or dis…but i think you are agreeing
As to point 2, my parents are followers of hinduism and when i told them 1.5 year back that i converted to Christianity. At first my mum wanted to shoot me and my wanted to know why i converted but now it’s pretty calm. I try to keep my butt out when ever i can when they are talking about religion.

now to respond to your comment’s points.
Yes you are right when you say that religion is a profitable market. Did you know last year the vatican aka pope made 13billion us dollars for just putting up his hand placing a cross on the new born babies through donations. But through this post i do not tend to aim the religion, christianity, but instead the people who think they are following the LORD’s acts and are doing the right thing but it’s about their pesonallity in the community. I mean if pope wanted he could make tunisia (a state in africa) another New York but NO. I’ll tell you an intresting event, you might have heard it before. When Jesus was in Israel, the 5 top Rabbi’s asked him to dine with him, jesus said yes and went along to the private dinner. Now these Rabbi’s right before they ate they had a ritual of washing their hands 13 times with different liquids right. Now Jesus looked at them and without going through this ritual he started eating while this guys are washing their hands with like water, oil, all sorts of different liquids. And then one of the rabbi looks at Jesus and says ‘you are our guest, how dare you skip our ritual’ and Jesus replies “you wash your hands 13 times to remove the dirt of your hands but what about the ‘dirt’ inside you” and then jesus said “Everything for you is about seen in public as important people, I mean you love to be looked up to. You love to be respected. You love the best seats so everyone can see you.” and then Jesus says “Everything thing for you is about appearance. How things look to other people?”

About the old testaments. Yeh they knid of freak me out, because they contradict they whole non-viloence thing. Maybe somepeople perform these rituals through fear, but i don’t think it’s through God himself. Today, i mean even if you say the Lords name in vain the vatican basically wants to slaughter you, so I think it’s through the political pressure that we tend to reason with God like” If you do that…Then he smight you”

Thank you

P.S. Old testaments was hard to swallow for me
P.S.S.We still have relgious contradictions at home

so now we have the religous scolar himself, FUB2, disregarding certain parts of the bible because HE DOESNT LIKe IT. im sorry, dont u believe that god is right and real and all that jazz? doesn that mean that the bible is real considering that its HIS apparent word. so on one hand u agree to whatever appeals to you, yet as soon as it contradicts ur uneducated beliefs you dismiss it. WHAT RIGHT DO YOU HAVE. you are saying your better than god? that you have a better judgement and are smarter than him? surely god put them in for a reason?

dear bob,
I’m not disregarding the old testament, As i said it clearly “it freaks me out” because if u have actually read the bible the new testment is alot different than. I haven’t read all the bible but when I read the new testment i took it well but grasping the old testament was harder because its alot different. And in the whole paragraph dude i don’t say anywhere that GOD isn’t right, this me blogging about how god is right. I say that I, me, me, no one else, only me, doesn’t understand the old testament well enough, therefore i cannot write as much on it BECAUSE i don’t understand it. ‘God put it there for a reason’, yes i know, and trying to find it. As you notice mate most of quotes are from the new testament, why, BECAUSE i don’t understand the old testament. NOT because i disregard him.

Also let’s get the other one your post straight:

Ofcourse i love my parents and i know that the other blog was a contradiction therefore i have removed the other blog

I’am sorry

keep in touch and keep reading
Thank you

Is Bitu God?

Here is a classic fault in Christianity, right here.

God wants this

No God wants that

My interpretation of the Bible is right

No mine is!

ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! The Bible, or the ‘word of God’, is nothing more the one massive 100000000000 page metaphor. Who are you to say that singing is not what god wants.

This is what happens when billions of people believe in one highly subjective book.

Hey MAD, howz it going,

Let get it first cleared : I wish i was, but NO, i’m not god, and nor i’m trying to enforce the fact that I;m trying to be.

1. The new testament isn’t a different interpretation of the old testament (taking in case that’s what you are talking about in your comment, if not then clear it and i’lll and reply about that). The old testament, as i said to earlier, is basically god’s view on how we humans live and him on being angry at us because we fail to see that his way is the best way. The new testament on the other hand is the ‘bridge’ between the gap we have created between us and him

2. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t sing to GOD, I’m saying that people sing not for the reason of singing through the purpose of finding LOVE but they sing because they have found FEAR. That’s what i mean when i say “GOD wants our hearts”

Thnx MAD for reading and sorry for late response
